Letters of Support for Rhyme & Reason Online

March 6, 2017

My child can be a little lazy when it comes to doing extra work after school or during the summer. That was not the case with Rhyme & Reason Online. He never once complained.

He definitely liked the Skype aspect and enjoyed being partnered up. Mrs. Lewis does a great job of finding students who work well together. He enjoyed the material in the lessons as well.

My son used to struggle with fluency. When he reads to me now, it is amazing how well he reads, using commas and periods correctly. He doesn't read paragraphs as run-on sentences anymore. He also used to struggle with comprehension. Again, he has improved tremendously, and it shows when he does passages for SOL review. The use of Skype for this program is definitely effective. I didn't find any challenges. The greatest benefit is that they are right at home. My husband travels during the week, so this was a huge plus for me -- not to have to drive my son somewhere three times per week.

I have recommended this program to other parents. It is a fabulous program, and it shows, as my son is a much better reader. He has gained a confidence in himself that was not there before he started the program.

My son has been using Rhyme & Reason, first as an after-school and summer reading program and now as a homeschool reading curriculum, for a little over a year. He loves it! He enjoys the one-on-one interaction with his teacher. He also loves the books and stories they read together.

As his parents we have seen tremendous results in his reading fluency and decoding skills, which was our main concern when we first enrolled. The improvements we have seen in regards to his writing and spelling have been an added bonus. The program is so well thought out and the material continues to impress me with every level. The books are engaging. He actually looks forward to reading. At first I was skeptical about using Skype. But kids today are drawn to technology, so in a sense, it adds to his experience. Using Skype also allows the program to be flexible. We are able to keep to our scheduled classes while traveling, as long as we have good Internet.

I highly recommend this program to anyone who has a child that struggles with reading. The results we have seen have far exceeded our expectations. Because of Rhyme & Reason, I now have the pleasure of seeing my son truly enjoy reading.

Teach reading and everything else will fall into place. This is a concept that the Rhyme & Reason group is passionate about. And because of that passion, they have changed my son’s life forever. At one time, his reading caused him to struggle in every subject. Now he is thriving and has a solid foundation to continue building on.

When Madison was in first grade she was struggling with reading and spelling basic words.  We would struggle with her homework every night, and we were both becoming frustrated.  Her 1st grade teacher suggested that I look into the Rhyme & Reason program with Mrs. Lewis.  We had her assessed, and she was placed in Level One.  We have continued with the program year round, and she now is reading at grade level. She has become a confident reader and has amazed her teachers, grandparents, and others with her progress.

Madison is involved in multiple sports, Girl Scouts, school clubs and music lessons.  Finding time to attend another class and the related driving, dropping off, and picking up would be almost impossible.  Having her reading program via Skype in our home is very convenient.  Mrs. Lewis has always been able to work around Madison's busy schedule to fit in three lessons a week.  While we are on vacation we are able to continue with classes since all we need is a computer and an internet connection.  It also allows Madison to receive personalized instruction.

Since Madison is busy with other activities, one would expect her to dread another class.  Quite the opposite. Madison loves her Skype class. I enjoy coming home from work and listening to her interact with Mrs. Lewis and the other student who joins her for Skype class.  I can tell they are having fun while learning.  Mrs. Lewis has taken the time to relate to and understand the students.

Madison says her favorite things about the classes are the oral quizzes, answering questions, and reading poetry.

I would highly recommend this class to parents whose child is struggling with reading. The current method of teaching in the schools does not seem to work for every child.  I am not an expert in reading methods, but I do know this program has put Madison on a par with the other students in her class.  In my opinion, reading is the most important skill to get ahead in life. We are almost finished with the current Superkids program but are excited to have Madison start the next Rhyme & Reason program.

I highly recommend the Rhyme & Reason Online reading program! My daughter is dyslexic and has made great progress in decoding and fluency since participating in this program. She really enjoys the format (one-on-one with her tutor over Skype) and the materials. Being able to work alone with the tutor, or occasionally with another child on her same reading level, has given her the comfort and safety to learn without fear of embarrassment. As a result, her confidence has really started to soar! Even to the point where she is comfortable reading in front of peers in school! And most importantly, there has been measurable progress. She started the program two grade levels behind in reading. She is now only half a grade level behind and is catching up quickly! Again, I highly recommend this program. It is fun and it works!

Just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know what Beth's teachers told me this morning.  I was at the school dropping something off and [Beth's resource teacher] saw me and excitedly asked me to follow her to her classroom. She said she tested Beth on a Fountas & Pinnell Level L book this morning, and Beth passed! [Her teacher] said that it was equivalent to a DRA 24. (She was at a DRA 8 in the Fall!) She is going to try a Level M with her tomorrow morning.

I was super pleased! (She was at a DRA 4 this time last year.) I thought that you'd like to know, too!

…Sean has begun reading signs around us - stores, billboards, everywhere we go. This is something new since starting classes with you. We are seeing a great improvement!

Sept. 28, 2015

I saw your flyers in the office at Tolbert Elementary this morning and shared [with our assistant principal] about Sean's wonderful experience with your services …

I'm so impressed with Sean's progress and attitude about reading. I think you have made such a difference in his life and I really appreciate all you do :)

We definitely want to continue with classes. Sean is really doing well in school this year, and I think the reading lessons with you are part of his success.  This year was the first time Sean received B's on his report card - and in every subject to top it off.  He repeated his honor roll performance during the second quarter.  And his efforts have all improved to outstanding with the exception of writing.  He is currently reading DRA 30 with 95% accuracy.  So proud of him and his hard work.

We are very pleased with [Lauren’s] progress.  She is less fearful of reading and just this weekend brought books out to read to me without being prompted! That is a milestone for her, and one I’m very proud of. I would like to continue with the semi-private lessons – Lauren enjoys those as well.      If you are open to a few schedule changes the week we are on vacation, I would like to try and make those work with you.

Thanks so much!

Nov. 12, 2015

We have been very pleased with Lauren’s progress. I can’t remember if I told you this, but she tested on her DRA at the beginning of this year at the same level she ended 3rd grade on – which means all of the work over the summer paid off.   She retained her knowledge through the summer, and came into the new school year strong.    While she is still reading below grade level, she has developed confidence in her ability to figure out words vs. getting frustrated and stopping.   Her teacher made comments in our conference about Lauren showing her work as she is trying to figure out words for her spelling tests.

So, with that said we would like to continue with the next session. Lauren is excited and knows this really helps her.

Thanks!

Thank you. We could not be happier.
